There are a couple different ways to get up and down Mt. Hale. Either go to the top and back down the same way or do it in a loop. My friends and I took the Hale Brook Trail. I don't remember how long it took but book time is 4.5 hours.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was my first time hiking to Frankenstein Cliff and third time to Arethusa (NH's tallest waterfall).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
(Parking was free, or a donation if one would like.)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We decided to change things up, instead of heading up on the regular Arethusa Falls Trail, we went down Bemis Brook Trail which brought us to see a couple of nice waterfalls.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
"Coliseum Falls"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The trail connects back to Arethusa Falls Trail. This was the first time seeing the falls without ice on it. There were a few other people there. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/10407838_469000983236618_4102038869857548536_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>

Heading down from the cliff was difficult. Some spots were wet and the trail was not marked very well. We ended up going down the wrong way. </div>

Trailhead<br />
Orris Road in Thornton, NH - exit 28 off of I-93<br />
Parking: $3<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="300" src="https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10329283_463610777108972_7750255997407966036_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
Don't let the size of these mountains fool you into thinking they're easy...because they're not! I'm not in my best hiking shape yet, but this certainly kicked my butt! I was not expecting a challenging hike, but the views were worth it!<br />
<br />
The trail was very well maintained and marked. You are in the woods until the first view point (not yet to Welch) then from there you are in and out of tree coverage, hiking, scrambling, squeezing around boulders and climbing trees to follow the trail. It was fun!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10414573_463609940442389_4667135315800277614_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Before the first view point. The beginning of the rock slab you hike for the rest of the trail.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/t1.0-9/10407091_463610067109043_7105323839813549209_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Follow the yellow brick road **don't lose sight of these!!!**</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="300" src="https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10407155_463610447109005_4445917769005741322_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This kind of shows you the steepness going up Welch Mountain. At times my ankles were hurting!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10358718_463610530442330_8262165360133623582_n.jpg" width="300" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You may not be able to see the red at the top of the rock, but that's a person.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t1.0-9/10308165_463610733775643_8664131220645644042_n.jpg" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
On top of Dickey Mountain where I met a couple who had completed the NH48 with their dog Sparky and were doing the 52 With a View list. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1.0-9/10337752_463611330442250_6603619888240315338_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Many stone stairs on this trail. Once you enter the woods at the end of Dickey Mtn., its a nice descent, great way to finish the loop! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/10330372_463611450442238_318510870615686299_n.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You will end up at this sign. Take a LEFT. It doesn't tell you where the parking lot is, but its that way! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The yellow markers were very important to watch for on this hike. Since the rock slab looked the same, at times I found myself looking around and realize I was going the wrong direction. At some parts, you need to look on trees or look up (some are hard to find). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

This may be the third time I've hiked this small mountain, but its so worth it! Same view, different day! This is still one of my favorite short hikes in the White Mountains. We completed it within a couple hours.<br />

This was a great afternoon hike. Book time is 2.5 hours, I think my friend and I completed it less than that. The trail is very well maintained. It was a nice day, we sat on the dock at the Lonesome Lake Hut for over an hour.<br />
<br />

This was my second time hiking the Coppermine Trail but a first for my two friends! It was fun telling them about the history and haunted story of the trail (read my other blog in June 2013 for a full story!). We picked a gorgeous day to go. The river wasn't as high this time around.<br />

This was the first 4k of the year for us! It was such a beautiful day out for it. We snowshoed up and (attempted) to slide down on trash bags. It was so much fun! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We took the famous Crawford Path (trail head beginning in the parking lot at the beginning of Mt. Clinton Rd). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t1.0-9/10264295_449269648543085_2051772254169042039_n.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We wanted to take the Mizpah cut-off to the hut and make a loop, but we got about 20 ft up and had to turn around. There was no trail nor anyway to figure out where the trail went, it just ended.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But at this break in the trail we met a very friendly Gray Jay! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1.0-9/1978802_10152316052538493_1103735580_n.jpg" width="252" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Continuing up Crawford path, it began getting a little bit slushy (more so on the way down). It was better just to bare boot it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

Arethusa is New Hampshire's tallest waterfall. It stands at 140 ft tall. Its a 2.6 mi RT hike. This was our first time snowshoeing!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
There were more people here than I thought there would be. Some vacationers and ice climbers. The whole falls was ice. When I hiked this last year in April, there was some ice but not like this. </div>

<br />
My friend and I decided to hike this mountain for a nice fall hike. The trail we took was Edmands Path, a 7 mile RT hike that took only 4.5 hours (the book time is 5 hours).<br />
<br />
<img height="240" src="https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/t1.0-9/545258_352488354887882_459592763_n.jpg" width="320" /><br />
Mt Clinton Rd is only open during the late spring until late fall and closed during the winter. People usually hike up Mt Pierce and then head over to Eisenhower.<br />
<br />
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1.0-9/1381986_352488558221195_1060166931_n.jpg" width="240" /><br />
The trail was very easy. Flat to begin with and slowly increased.<br />

This is from my 3rd time hiking Mt. Washington. The tallest mountain in NH. Although it was my 3rd time hiking it, it was the first time doing it on a beautiful day! AND hiked it in a record time for me, 7 hours. I went along with three other friends. One from here in the states, one from Turkey and another from South Africa. Here are some pictures of that day, 9/9/13<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our original plan was to complete the whole Presidential Range, Madison to Jackson, but the weather was just too much and we were making poor timing. We decided to head down Caps Ridge Trail from Jefferson. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At 1.4 miles, there's an intersection where we thought we were still continuing onto Caps Ridge Trail but we ended up hitting up The Link trail............HORRIBLE MISTAKE! This trail is 1.6 miles, all boulders, and it was extremely difficult to find the next cairn because of the fog. So instead of ending up on Base Rd in Bretton woods, we took the Castle Trail back down to Route 2. Once we reached the road, it was 3 miles back to the car. Making that little mistake caused us to add 5 plus miles onto our trip and we ended up doing just about the same miles as it would have been to do the whole presidential range.</div>

I have hiked 19 out of the 48 4,000 Footers in NH. I still need to hike one more mountain to complete the top 10 (Moosilauke). </div>

We started this hike at 5 AM. We parked one car at the Zealand Trailhead ($3) and drove to the trailhead to North Twin Trail (free). The first part of the N. Twin Trail was very hard to follow. The actual trail crosses the river several times but I have read before hand that its best to follow the river on the left side. You cross the river where the fallen tree is. This part took us awhile to get across. </div>

To get to the trail head, travel on I-93 (either N or S) take exit 32. There is parking on both sides of the high way. Parking is FREE. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My friends and I decided to ascend via Falling Waters Trail, then travel on Franconia Ridge Trail, and descend via Old Bridle Path. I was told that going down Falling Waters Trail was difficult so I wanted to try going up it. By going up, we were able to look at beautiful waterfalls! The trail wasn't that bad, although this day it was since it was raining. Very slippery. </div>

When we got to the summit of Little Haystack, it was really cold, rainy, and foggy. While hiking on the Franconia Ridge, we had to hide multiple times behind rocks to get away from the 60 mph winds! We couldn't tell which peak was the summit of Lincoln. Nor could we see more than 10 ft in front of us. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From the Greenleaf Hut, we had 2.7 more miles to go to reach the trailhead...we did it in the pouring rain, thunder, lighting...and who could forget about that mountain lion! The Old Bridle Path was EXTREMELY slippery! Majority of the time we were crab walking down the slabs of rock. I banged my knee into a stump, blood was shed on hands...its was a good time. LOL. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My friends and I took the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to get to the summits of Mt. Monroe and Mt. Washington. Due to severe weather warnings, we took the Cog Railway down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To get to the trailhead, take Route 302 until you get to the Cog Railway Base Road. There are two starting points. The main one (which is a $3 parking fee) is located about a mile before the train station. We parked at the train station, which shaved off a mile. Its free to park there except during peak seasons which they charge $5 a car. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The trail was a lot more fun than Jewell Trail. There's many waterfalls, rocks, boulders, and scenic views. Two popular spots on this trail include:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But there are many un-named waterfalls, streams, and pools on the trail. The path is steep majority of the time. We had to scramble up the rocks a lot. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After we hiked to Mt Monroe, we looped around and heading up to the summit of Mt. Washington via Crawford Path. The path from the Lakes of the Clouds hut was all rocks/boulders. The weather changes extremely quickly sometimes up there. When we started, it was partly cloudy, but as we got closer to the top, we couldn't see much infront of us. We also met two hikers, who met each other at the beginning of their hikes and decided to hike up together. It was great talking with them and sharing the experience with them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a joke (since we could barely see anything) that we would probably run into the building...we just about did. Here's some pictures of the hike up and the summit. We spent awhile at the top and took the Cog Railway down. </div>

The trailhead is located on Coppermine Road. Its off of 116 in Franconia. We drove past it at first, turned around then found it. There is no fee for parking. Park the car, and walk up .4 miles on the road until you reach the Coppermine Trail. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The trail itself is fairly easy. When we went it was a little muddy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/7800_301989999937718_1870562455_n.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a great story behind this trail, whether myth or not. The famous actress Bette Davis walked this trail when she was visiting Sugar Hill/Franconia area.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="http://img002.lazygirls.info/people/bette_davis/bette_davis_betty_davis_old_hollywood_beauty_tricks_bette_davis1_OQ1QvJ9.sized.jpg" width="238" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bette got lost on the trail and her future husband, Arthur Farnsworth, found her and brought her back to safety. (Long story short) They married, she found him with another woman, filed for divorce. During the process of divorce, Bette supposedly hit Arthur in the head with a lamp. No immediate reaction. Until three days later, he collapsed and died out of the blue. She was put on trial but was found not guilty. Divorce papers disappeared and a plaque was placed on the trail in memory of Arthur. Bette confessed, on her death bed, that she had killed Arthur. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The plaque can be difficult to find. We couldn't find it ascending the trail. Look for an open, camp area. There are a couple of fire pits. Head towards the Coppermine Brook. The plaque is on a rock on the edge of the brook.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The waterfall itself is breathtaking! Here's some pictures:</div>

To get to the trail head: On route 3, there is a road called Gale River Loop Road. Depending on which way you enter the road, you will follow it until you find Garfield Trailhead. Only from March-November the road is open to travel up to the trailhead. During winter, you need to park outside the gate, near the main road which adds about 1.2 miles to your total trip. There is no parking fee.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My friends and I decided to ascend via Garfield Trail. Its 4.8 miles until you reach the Garfield Ridge Trail. This part of the trail I found to be very easy! So if you are looking for a easy yet challenging hike, do this! For about 2 miles, its all flat, going through the woods, crossing rivers. The rest has an incline but its not horrible. From the intersection, take a right (although the sign says left). The next .2 miles is STEEP! </div>

I think I'm going to start posting a picture of the map to help anyone reading this!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a few ways to get to Mt. Liberty and Mt Flume. My friends and I took the Liberty Spring Trail to Mt. Liberty then took the Franconia Ridge Trail to Mt. Flume (not labeled) then back tracked. We were warned multiple times NOT to go down Flume Slide Trail. My hiking book I have says its one of the most difficult trails in New Hampshire because it's not maintained well and hard to find the trail. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To get to the trailhead:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Take exit 34A off of 93 in Franconia Notch. It's the first parking turn off. There is no fee. There are bathrooms at the trailhead. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From the parking lot, head onto the Pemi Trail for .6 miles, until you reach the bike path. Follow the bike path over two bridges and there will be a sign on the right for Liberty Springs Trail. (From the parking lot its a total of .9 miles to Liberty Springs Trail)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Fun Fact: Liberty Springs Trail is part of the famous Appalachian Trail and is maintained well by the Appalachian Mountain Club. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a great day for hiking. It was humid, we sweated more than usual, but there was no rains. It was a cloudy day but the sun was still able to peak through. </div>

Mt. Waumbek<br />
--4,006'--<br />
--3.6 mi (one way) & 1 mi from Mt Starr King--<br />

<br />
The trail head begins at the end of Starr King Road in Jefferson, NH. The road is located right across the main road from the Waumbek golf course entrance. There is no fee. Drive slow up this dirt road, I bottomed out a couple times.<br />
<br />
This was a great hike...well besides all the mud! My friend and I had to cross the trail many times to walk on the least muddiest side. There were also a couple of trees down on the trail.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/923018_291452594324792_1870773150_n.jpg" width="240" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/943087_291452534324798_789656375_n.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
I'm not sure about distance, but I'm guessing the first 1.5 miles or so were the hardest. Only because, like mentioned before, the mud and also because it was steep. I'm glad it was gradually steep though!<br />
<br />
The trail is well shaded from the sun and wind (although there wasn't wind today, I can only assume). It becomes less steep the closer you get to the half way point. **TIP** To know if you're nearing the middle/top of Mt Starr King, the trees will change and moss will be on the rocks/ground (I need to learn my types of trees!).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1198_291452770991441_859489661_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>
<br />
Once the steepness was gone, my friend and I power hiked the rest of the way to Mt Starr King. Just a great workout that's for sure! There was a little bit of snow on the this summit. Here's what we saw today:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="300" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/931229_291453014324750_1390064075_n.jpg" width="400" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I read somewhere that there used to be a shelter here and this fireplace is the last standing part of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On the right side of that fire place is the trail to continue onto Mt Waumbek!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/254195_291453154324736_160241561_n.jpg" width="240" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Look for that "Path" sign.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From here, it was only 1 mile until the 4,006' summit. It's the 46th tallest mountian in New Hampshire. (My second 4,000 Footer hiked from the list). This 1 mile hike was really easy, another time to power hike and get great cardio in. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The sign that you're at the summit. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There wasn't ANY view from the summit of Mt Waumbek. It was a little disappointed so we decided to hike further down the Kilkenny Trail. After about maybe 20 feet, there was a clearing where we got some great views! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

--5 mi RT--<br />
--#48--<br />
<br />
Over the past week, we've experienced A LOT of rain and even snow in northern NH (yes in May!) Finally a break comes with promises of blue skies. It was really windy and chilly all day but it didn't prevent my friends and I from hiking our first 4,000 Footer of the year (for some, it was their first one ever!)<br />
<br />
Mt. Tecumseh is located in Waterville Valley. Take Exit 28 off from 93 n/s. Follow that road until Tripoli Road on the left. Follow it until the ski area. Turn onto the ski area road and park in lot 1. (no fees). The trail-head is located next to the parking area.<br />
<br />
When I was planning this, I wanted to hike something bigger but not too crazy. So I decided to hike Mt. Tecumseh since its the smallest on the 4,000 Footer's list reaching at 4,003 feet.<br />
<br />
On our drive down, the Presidentials and Franconia Notch were covered with snow. I was worried that this mountian would have as much snow as Cannon Mountain did, but thankfully there wasn't! The weather was beautiful, the leaves on the trees bright green.<br />
<br />
<img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/v/972945_290877301048988_347942018_n.jpg?oh=6f86550194b8f28c1d524fe2b2f82cd3&oe=51A58C0D&__gda__=1369862799_a21335adf2fbc92ce9a8f1ba31219193" width="240" /> <img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/401852_290989967704388_1464764148_n.jpg" width="240" /><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
From the amount of rain we got within the past week, I'm surprised the stream we had to cross wasn't any deeper! It was still difficult finding rocks to step on to get across. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
It was SOOOO steep...pretty much the majority of the hike was like this!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
When we got to the top, two other hikers were up there. Then gradually more and more hikers reached the top, not even 10 minutes after us. It was crazy how close together all 21 (YES 21) of us hikers reached the top within close time coming from all different trails. The summit quickly became busy and was just too much. On our decent, there were many more hikers climbing up. </div>

I LOVE stopping and talking to other hikers. Everyone is so friendly! Most were surprised we began our hike at 8 AM. At that time, we were the only car in the lot. </div>

This hike was challenging because of the steepness. I personally feel hiking other larger mountains are easier than this! </div>

But get out there and hike! </div>
